Mural Information

Extensive community involvement has been key to the design for the mural.  The project was launched in early September 2024 with a widely distributed online survey to gather initial insights.  More than 70 people replied, sharing their love of Glen canyon, especially for its wildflowers and wildlife.  This was followed with a community meeting in late September to introduce the artist, Sirron Norris, so that he could hear directly from residents to draft a design.   Attendees talked about the plants, birds, walkers/hikers, with children sharing stories about Silver Tree Day Camp and offering highlights of the canyon’s history.

The shape and low height of the wall are challenging for an artist.   Artist Sirron Norris additionally noted that people walk by the wall, they are in motion and likely will be glimpsing, rather than stopping.   He focused on creating a sense of movement highlighting the canyon’s trails and paths as a core element in the design.  The paths are surrounded by what a passerby sees in the park, Glen Canyon Recreation Center, Silver Tree Camp, and of course, flowers and birds.  The hiking boot with red shoelaces will surely delight as it seemingly hangs from the ball field above and heads toward the park entrance.

Attendees enthusiastically greeted the design with expressions of “I love it,” “whimsical,” “ageless” at the community feedback meeting held at the Glen Park Recreation Center on November 16, 2024.
